Merino Wool FAQ

Q: My child has sensitive skin and allergies – isn’t wool scratchy and irritating?

A: Superfine Merino fibres are unlike traditional wool, in that each fibre has a silky outer on every strand, creating an extremely soft, fine texture, that will not scratch or itch skin. It naturally regulates body temperature, eliminating dampness which can breed germs and allergens.

Q: What does 100% Superfine Merino Wool fabric feel like? Also is it durable?

A: It feels like a soft light weight stretch jersey fabric. Our garments are extremely durable and the natural elasticity of the Merino fibre means it stretches with your baby’s movement, but then returns to its natural shape, it really is a robust fibre, so there is less chance of garments sagging or stretching.

Q: I have a merino wool top that is not at all like you describe the Little Bonbon range.

Our Merino Wool fibres have a low micron count of 17 which means the fibres are finer, hence softer. The merino wool that is generally used by high end chain stores is around the 24 micron count.  This is a significant differnece in the world of wool.

Q: How do I care for my Merino baby clothes?

A: Merino fibres naturally resist the build up of odours, and are naturally stain resistant so there is no need to wash your babies merino garment after every wear. Simply turn the garment inside out, and hang over the edge of your cot for a few hours or overnight to air out the garment. When washing your merino garments, always follow the care label instructions on the garment. For best results, Merino garments should be washed on a delicate cycle using warm water (under 40˙C). Merino garments, like most other natural fibres, should not be soaked, bleached, washed in hot water, harsh detergents or spot washed. If you have the time, please try and dry your garments flat in the shade away from direct sunlight. It really does make a difference. You may tumble dry on a low heat, and iron with a cool setting if required. The care label is stitched on the inside of the garment.

Q: What about the warmer seasons, can my baby still wear Merino wool?

A: You bet, it really is ideal for hot weather, because 100% Merino Wool is reactive to the changes in body temperature, this means when your baby gets hot and sweaty the merino fibres take over removing the moisture from your baby’s skin and releasing it into the air; keeping your baby dry and comfortable. So, this means your baby will keep warm in winter and cool in summer.

Q: What other benefits does Merino Wool have?

A: Well, where do I start! Merino wool is static resistant due to its moisture absorption qualities, which eliminates the build up of static electricity. This amazing fibre is also naturally fire resistant, however, please always ensure that your baby is kept well away from a naked flame. You will be glad to know that merino also has naturally high UV protection, much higher than synthetics and even cotton.

Q: I am concerned about the environment and the sustainability of the goods I bring into my home?

A: You will be pleased to know that Merino wool only takes a few years to decompose once it is disposed, also Merino wool is a renewable source as Merino sheep produce new fleece ever year.
